Tauranga’s new rooftop bar goes over and above.

There’s nothing like a fun new find and we can’t wait to tell you about our latest and greatest, Monarch. Tucked between Bayfair and Caltex on Girven Road, Imbibe’s rooftop bar is in an unlikely spot, but has a gorgeous airy feel, with bright butterflies and graffiti art offset by the blue sky overhead. The central bar is flanked by two spaces, one open to the elements and the other sheltered by shade sails, making it perfect for evenings both warm and cool.
Monarch’s long weekends begin on Thursday nights, when it opens to serve cocktails, beer and wine to the after-work set, who quickly morph into the evening set. Grab one of Monarch’s delicious burgers to fill the gap, or wander downstairs to Imbibe’s main restaurant for a meal.
Imbibe has a loyal following, thanks to its live music and the menu in the main restaurant and bar downstairs that caters to everyone – families, groups of friends and couples. There are always plenty of specials on offer, like the legendary stone-grill plates that are two-for-one on Tuesday nights. Sunday afternoons are made for the classic roast, which is served from 11am to 9pm for those who want to end their week with a belly full of succulent meat and plenty of roasted veges with delicious homemade gravy.
Imbibe is deceptively big, with several different zones, each with their own atmosphere. Upstairs, Monarch is a beautiful thing, and the downstairs bar is Imbibe’s heart, with low-slung, exposed light bulbs and dark wood creating a cosy ambience. Connecting to this is an outdoor courtyard filled with greenery, palms and umbrellas, while the main restaurant has tables suitable for large groups and intimate booths for date nights, and is presided over by a mural of a young wahine with tā moko brought to life by splashes of colour.
